Double Standard

In June I lost control of my Diabetes and began to lose weight. I am 6' tall and on July 1st I weighed about 152 lbs. For someone my size that is pretty slender. Almost 2 weeks ago I started taking insulin at meals. Since then i have gained about 5 lbs. At the time of the picture above (last night) I weighed approximately 157 lbs. I am glad to be gaining weight but still need more to reach my ideal level.

Before I took this picture a female friend told me, "You look skinny". In the past few months this remark has been pretty common. I typically respond with, "Yeah, I'm trying to gain some weight; my doctor said I need to gain weight." But this time I took a step back and thought about the comment. What was her intention? Was it a compliment, a concern, or just a remark?

Our society has created gender roles, "a set of perceived behavioral norms associated particularly with males or females, in a given social group or system" as defined by Wikipedia. These roles have added much connotation to the words below:

WORDGENDERCONNOTATION
"Skinny"MaleWeak
"Skinny"FemaleSexy
"Big"MaleStrong, Attractive
"Big"FemaleUgly
"Fat"Male/FemaleOverweight

So, how should I take the statement, "You look skinny"? Thankfully I'm not too sensitive and made a joke about working out.
